Fall in Northwest Ohio has a way of sneaking up on us.
One minute you’re enjoying the last warm weekends of summer, and the next you’re trying to fit cars back into the garage, put away patio furniture, find the snow shovel and figure out where all the stuff accumulated over the summer came from.
Before cold weather settles into Findlay and the rest of Hancock County, fall is one of the best times of year to tackle a home cleanout.
The goal doesn’t have to be a perfectly organized house. Sometimes you simply need to get rid of the things you already know you don’t need.
Here are 10 places to start.
1. The Garage
If your garage became the family’s unofficial storage unit over the summer, you’re not alone.
Start with the big things taking up valuable floor space:
- Broken lawn chairs
- Old shelving
- Damaged storage totes
- Scrap lumber
- Children’s outdoor toys they’ve outgrown
- Broken tools
- Empty boxes and packaging
- Leftovers from home improvement projects
Imagine being able to pull both vehicles into the garage before the first icy morning. That’s motivation enough.
2. The Basement
Basements tend to collect things because there’s always room for “just one more box.”
Until there isn’t.
Fall is a great time to tackle old furniture, outdated decorations, broken household items, renovation leftovers and boxes that haven’t been opened in years.
A good rule: if you forgot you owned it until you started cleaning, ask yourself whether you really need to keep storing it.
3. The Shed
Before you pack the shed full of winter equipment, take everything out and evaluate what deserves to go back in.
Look for broken planters, damaged outdoor decorations, old garden supplies, scrap wood, cracked containers and tools that aren’t worth repairing.
Making room now makes spring much easier.
4. Old Patio Furniture
Northwest Ohio winters aren’t especially kind to outdoor furniture.
If you’ve been hanging onto a broken chair, rusted table or damaged outdoor item with plans to “fix it someday,” this might be the year to finally let it go.
You don’t want to spend another winter storing something you already know you won’t use next summer.
5. Kids’ Outdoor Toys
Kids grow quickly. Their stuff seems to multiply even faster.
Fall is an excellent time to sort through:
- Broken plastic toys
- Old play equipment
- Damaged bikes or scooters
- Water tables
- Outdoor playhouses
- Worn sports equipment
- Toys your kids have outgrown
Donate or sell usable items first, then dispose of things that are broken or no longer safe.
6. Summer Project Leftovers
Did you replace flooring, build a deck, remodel a room or finally finish that project you started in May?
The project may be finished, but sometimes the debris is still sitting in the garage.
Scrap lumber, old cabinets, removed flooring, drywall and other renovation debris can take up a surprising amount of room.
Instead of letting it sit until spring, fall is a great time to finish the last part of the project: getting rid of the mess.
7. Old Furniture
That chair in the basement.
The dresser in the garage.
The old entertainment center nobody has used in ten years.
You know the ones.
Large furniture can be one of the biggest obstacles during a home cleanout because it doesn’t fit conveniently into a normal trash can.
If you’re clearing multiple rooms or getting rid of several bulky items, having a roll-off dumpster in the driveway can save a lot of hauling back and forth.
8. Storage Areas
Fall is also a great opportunity to tackle closets, spare rooms and storage areas.
You don’t necessarily need to throw everything away. Create three categories:
Keep. Donate or sell. Dispose.
Pull the obvious trash and broken items first. Then you can make better decisions about what’s worth keeping.
9. Pre-Holiday Clutter
The holidays have a funny way of bringing even more things into the house.
Before decorations, gifts, boxes and visitors arrive, make some space.
Clearing clutter now can make November and December feel much less chaotic.
Think of it as making room for the season ahead rather than simply throwing things away.
10. The Stuff You’ve Been Avoiding
Every house seems to have that pile.
Maybe it’s behind the garage.
Maybe it’s in the basement.
Maybe it’s a collection of half-finished projects you’ve been walking around for the last two years.
Start there.
Sometimes getting rid of one big pile gives you enough momentum to tackle the rest of the house.
When Does Renting a Dumpster Make Sense?
For a few bags of clutter, your regular trash service may be all you need.
But when you’re cleaning a garage, basement, shed, renovation area or several spaces at once, repeatedly loading a truck and making disposal trips can turn a weekend project into a much bigger job.
That’s where having a dumpster sitting in your driveway can make the process dramatically easier.
Walk out.
Throw it in.
Keep cleaning.
At EZ Dumpsters LLC, we offer 10-yard, 16-yard and 20-yard roll-off dumpsters for projects throughout Findlay, Hancock County and surrounding Northwest Ohio communities.
